Common -- Invocation Appreciation Post

At my 23rd Birthday Party, I vividly recall the first record spun.

Yo Strife, throw this on.

And then...

Cuts by Minista Sinista
No I.D. horns
And Common flowin over the speakers:

Envisioning the hereafter, listening to Steve Wonder, on a quest for love like the Proceed Drummer.

Once that beat came on, Connor and I made eye contact.
Heads started nodding.
And fists were in the air.

You wanna talk instant gratification???
Give me new wiper blades.
Give me a diving board and a swimming pool.
And throw on Common -- Invocation.

I could be put this joint on Winamp, hit repeat, play it all day, and still not get sick of it.

Okay? I'm sayn.

I'd definitely be rockin this if I was a warriors fan...

Regardless, the killa crossover was lethal.
Mullin's GM tactics ain't as dope as his crew cut/ jumpshot. (Adonal Foyle for $55 Million????)
Mitch Richmond. Started off his career as '87 ROY. Ended it with a championship ring on the '02 Lakers. Good for him.

Wherever you are right now, take a moment and think to yourself:

What is my purpose?

Ok, just kidding. Not the place, nor the time.

I have nothing to write.
Might as well write about Hip-Hop.

Just purchased:
Roots,The Tipping Point. It needs a couple more spins.
Raekwon, Only Built for Cuban Linx. I got it at a steal...$5.99! Without a doubt, this is the definitive album in the whole Wu catalog. The RZA at his finest here, making beats that ride the fine line of abstraction and funkiness. Knuckleheadz, Verbal Intercourse, Can It All Be So Simple, Ice Cream...yikes! Too many.

This came out in 1995. I was a junior in High School.
White boys blasting Fugazi and 311 in the Claremont High parking lot.

Then I'd would roll through in the dropped Celica.
Left hand smoking a bidi. Right hand on the wheel.
Ice Cream, (the cassingle, purchased at wherehouse for $1.99), bumpin through the pioneer 12".

Raekwon and Ghost spittin over a grimy RZA beat:
Goddamn! Backyard's banging like a benzi. If I was jiggy, you'd be spotted like Spudz McKenzie.
I love you, like I love my dick size.

Then I'd park my car. Roll up the windows.
Emerge from the Celica, rocking a White USA Polo Sport T-Shirt, Baggy Jeans, and Timbos.

Ahh...1995. Man, I was cool.

Should've worked out last night.
Ate In-N-Out instead.

That's it. No more. None of this nonsense.
2 Weeks till school starts.
2 Weeks to get in shape.
2 Weeks of Swimming in the AM. Running in the PM.
I got the time. Might as well.
Feel better about myself.

No more In-N-Out.
Oatmeal.
Wheaties.
Chicken Breasts.
Rice.
Vegetables.
Fuji Apples.
Bananas.
Water, Water, Water.

South America starting to look mighty appealing for the holidays. Just gotta get the funds and I'm set.

Andy: What's the chances of me hooking up with a latin woman?
Matt: 100%. (Without hesitation.)

Is there anything hotter than a latin woman speaking spanish to you while in bed?
!Que Rico!

Not that I would know.

I've made some interesting groups of friends in the past few years. And I really do kick it with alot of different types of people.

Stoners, Intellects, B-Boys, Poppers, Lockers, Girls, DJ's, Athletes,Freedom Fighters, Graffiti Writers, etc.

Let's analyze:
Starbucks Peoples.
Junior High Crew.
Asians.
Claremont Grad Students.

But there's something about the UCSB Squad that I hold special in my heart.

I'm not sure what it is exactly.
Maybe it's our esoteric language.
Perhaps it's the "don't trip" vibe.
Could be the individual soul yall possess.
Or maybe because you've witnessed my personal growth these couple years after college.
Is it the impending holiday trip to South America?

Could be all of that and some more.
I don't know.

Maybe I break it down further in the next issue of BP.

So I'm talking to white girl.
And I'm telling her how I think one of our professor's is hot.

And she's like...

I don't think so.
I don't know about those fake and bake women.
I just can't relate to those bottled blondes.
It's just not me.
I have principles.

Damn! Sippin on the...
You know what I'm saying?

Principles?
So, if not having fake tans and dyed blonde hair are on your list of "principles"...

I guess that same list does not include:
1) Keeping your bush trimmed for hygenic purposes.
2) Going down on Asian Dudes.

Whoa, that was mean.
What's gotten into me?
I like insensitive acat.

My thought's on the olympics?
White-water kayaking is probably the coolest event.
You have to kayak through checkpoints, row upstream, all while having your lower body paralyzed inside the skull.
It's all arms.
Wow.

I caught it on NBC at 2AM, and I was so intrigued.
I mean -- mesmerized.
I wish I had a man-made white-water rafting river in my backyard.

How fun would that be?
I wouldn't even wanna kayak it though.
Rather, I'd purchase some innertubes.
Invite the fellas over.
And then have races down the river.

Slowest time buys slurpees.

I don't know what's gotten into me lately.
I see a hot girl walking down the street and I can't help but to picture her naked.
I don't know why.
Maybe cuz it's summer.
And it's hot.
And I'm from the city where they buried Al Capone.
And House music was born.
Ok, I'm not.
That would be Chicago.

But I am from the land of --
72 suburbs looking for a city.
Los Angeles Women.
Are you kidding me?
Why these girls look so good in the summer?

Went out last night.
Q's. Temple Bar.
They all had one thing in common.

Cleavage.
Bursting out all over.

Teaching the Cornell Note-taking system to students who I am tutoring as part of my class. Professors want me to model a passage about mosquitoes. Mosquitoes? I say forget you...

Why? Cuz I got two cool kids.

Lesly -- the avid dancer will practice note taking on this article.

As I step to the mic in my B-Boy Stance.

Kayu -- the computer geek, gets this article.

Millenium Achievement Award.

SAY WORD.

I'm not sure what has made me more happier...

The invention of the Bull-garita : Redbull, Tequila, Triple Sec.

(A Patron Bull-garita of all things...uh-oh. Tequila's already the only alcohol that a stimulant. Combine that with some Redbull and my friday nights are bout to get real extreme.)

Purchasing Hip Hop Forever II: Quality of mixtapes has declined over the years. What was once a true demonstration of the deejay's ability to cut, scratch, mix, and juggle records, the mixtape has become essentially a promotional tool for artists on the come up.

(Chad, can we get a SaraB mixtape?)

But every once in a while the right mixtape will come along, and Jazzy Jeff does not disappoint. Rare groves make this record a true gem. INI -- Square One. Jeru -- Can't Stop the Prophet (Pete Rock RMX). And songs I ain't heard in a minute always make me happy. Smif-n-Wessun -- Bucktown. Missin Linx -- MIA.

Anything by Jazzy Jeff = Dope.
The Magnificent = Dope
Hip Hop Forever II = Dope
Jazzy Jeff playing Jazz as Will's homeboy. He had a mad crush on Hilary and always got the boot from Uncle Phil's pad in Bel-Air. = Dope

Anybody know where I can cop Hip Hop Forever I???

Date with white girl tonight.
Can't decide if I like her or not.
Or even if I remotely have the tiniest crush on her.
I don't think I like her.
I like the novelty of going on a date with a white girl.
I don't even think she likes me.
She likes the novelty of going out on a date with an Asian dude.

Regardless of my feelings (or lack thereof) for white girl, I am going on a date tonight. Which means...

I need to wash my car.

Seems like NY is the place to be amongst my friends in 2004. What with Connor and Jenn living out there. Dave about to move. Matt being offered a job. Should be a fun time when I visit, for sure.

Speaking of fun times...out of the past seven days, I can honestly say I've been hung over about five of those days...meaning I've been inebriated 4 times in the past week.

And I still got my papers written by their deadlines while managing to sneak a few workouts in.

It's time for homie roll call.

The kid in oxnard? Sup with your boy Q? I wouldn't trip though. Drew henson batted .400 in college.

C-bass. Reserves some plane tickets in October. We're going to a Dodger Game.

Baruti. I think I need to make a "best of baruti's shoutouts on andycat's comments forum" post.

aperwep in the ATL. Hope you got some pics of you having lunch with Spud Webb at Chick-fil-a.

JC. Yes I got with two girls in one weekend. But I don't expect girls to swallow.

Max, D-Dub. Who don't like a fuckn Fiesta?????????????????

Veronica's Birthday was last sunday. Mine was on wednesday.
Happy Birthday to us. We're the coolest one's.

I admire the multiculturalism of baseball. Take the Dodgers.
We have a Korean, a Jew, a few Dominicans, a Venezuelan, a Canadian, a couple Japanese, and some native Southern Califonians in Jeff Weaver and Milton Bradley.

Now I'm not too sure about trading LoDuca, the heart and soul of the Dodger Team...but DePodesta is some hot shot 31-year-old Harvard Grad Cum Laude, and what he said about the trade was true. The Dodgers can make the playoffs, but they'd get ousted in the first round by a more offensive team like Atlanta. Dodgers are looking to go deep into October. With Penny's experience, Choi's bat, and Finley's glove...they got a chance. They add more power, while their defense is still tops in the Major League.

Miss LoDuca. But I like the team. And I dig DePodesta's guts to pull this trade, even if we didn't get the Unit.

I love talking sports.
