There's some great story tellers out there.

But you really can't make this up.

Dodger Stadium, 6/29, 10:15AM.

It's not often you get to see a 65 year old pitching coach make fun of his 37 year old fat relief pitcher.

But that's what I witness yesterday when Jim Colburn kept on calling Wilson Alvarez (I LOVE RAZN SLAW, rearranged) the "BIG SEXXXY" yesterday during a bullpen session for the injured relief pitcher.

Ladies and Gentleman, the BIG SEXXXY!

Good pitch, BIG SEXXXY.

How's the shoulder feeling, BIG SEXXXY?

Give a hand for the BIG SEXXXY!

And the whole time, Wilson had this look on his face that just said...

Shut the hell up.

Needless to say, it was all pretty entertaining.

Click here to watch Wilson have a snack.

Are you serious?

Andrew Bynum with the 10th????

I don't like high schoolers. Especially those born in 1987.

Great, at least we have the next Desagana Diop.

Kupchak's an idiot.

Sometimes when I'm bored in class, I just look at this picture.

And I think to myself,

Self, Josh really makes this picture.

Or I just think about my next game of MVP Baseball 2005.

Two seconds of eye contact. And a seductive smile. You know??? That kind of smile.

Smiling with your eyes.

And she reciprocated.

What???

That got me shook. Don't normally get those reaction from girlies.

And that's it.

That's the end of the story.

Didn't talk to her.

Just smiled.

And she smiled back.

And I proceeded with my really cool bottle of water.

Steppin out to The Gap Band, "Outstanding."

Percussions-a-bouncing, this funkalicious track is truly a feel-good summer anthem.

Ask Soul for Real, and B-Side BIG.

He also doesn't worry if he makes it or misses it, even if he's having a bad game.

"You've got to have a smile on your face and enjoy the game, because there's a lot more serious things going on in this world than just playing the game of basketball," Horry said.

Has Robert Horry reached this Andre Agassi-esque level of athletic likeableness where it's impossible not to root for the guy?

Big Shot Bob. Truly Incredible.

ANDYDOAN1: is reflection eternal perfect?
MdotCostello: what are you talking about
ANDYDOAN1: kweli and hi-tek's first album
MdotCostello: yeah i know
MdotCostello: why are you asking me that
ANDYDOAN1: because i think you're knowledgeable on the subject
MdotCostello: well its def a top 5 album of all time, in my opinion
ANDYDOAN1: no doubt

Reflection Eternal Revisited

From the moment I heard Chappelle's Voice on Expansion Dedication doing his best Nelson Mandela and urging listener's to check out Hi-Tek and Kweli, I knew homeboy was on to something.

This came out during the Rawkus Label's heyday, my 4th year in Santa Barbara, and right around the time I started losing weight and getting in shape.

I remember poppin the CD into my Pentium 2 DVD-ROM before going on a run and nodding my head to "Too Late". At the time Kweli and Hi-Tek as well as the whole Rawkus Roster were catering to the disillussioned head, capturing those years of frustration with one profound hook; "nowadays rap artists coming half-hearted/commercial like pop/or underground like black-markets/where were you the day hip-hop died/is it too early too mourn/is it too late to ride."

And I knew with that Kweli had just cemented himself as one this generations most poetic MC's.

I remember the time when Costello, Connor, and myself saw Kweli moving the crowd in Hollywood with Lifesavas opening. Hah! "Yo Jumbo! Can I get a drop for my show?"
21+. No Backpackers. Ill.

Truly one of the few records I can listen to from the front to the back.
And speaking of Front to the Back...

Down for the Count w/ Xzibit, Rah Digga, and Lennox Lewis is the choice cut on this album. Although at the moment I'm coming from the heart when I say that I am partial to Love Language, and Love Speakeasy.

Because, the language of love cannot be translated...

Stolen from Cicely:

andy made out with a white girl. why are white girls such a trophy for asian guys? even when i was little, i remember overhearing my parents talking about their friend who "wanted to try a white girl." i was 8, they didn't think i knew what they were talking about but i'm "extremely smart." are white girls trophies for everyone? do white guys have trophies? do asian girls have trophies? do other people have trophies?

I think this makes for interesting conversation and I'm happy she mentions the idea of "trophy" with regards to race that so many of us are afraid to acknowledge.

(And if you don't know Cicely, she is a beautiful filipina who not only recognizes the beauty of the Asian America Male but also understands the emasculation that we have endured .)

Why does my stomach feel the necessity to eat beyond its capacity?

At some point it needs to re-think it's limitations and realize that a 5-hour window of hefenweizen, spinach herb bagel with cream cheese, egg fried rice, house special beef, fortune cookie, hebrew kosher hot dog, pepsi, korean bbq, white rice, and an orange-banana smoothie will induce goodyear blimp-esque waistlines and pangs of irritable bloatedness.

At least the gluttonous being is a satisfied one.

If I was a fortune cookie writer, my first fortune would read:

GET ME OUT OF THIS DAMN FORTUNE COOKIE FACTORY.
1 10 21 17 19 5

Tonight I indulged in the absurdity of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

(Yes we are more than just Next Friday, and Rodney King.)

Three for Hee

Weekend Recap:

Win $40.00 on Afleet Alex at the Belmont.
Make out with cute white girl.
Hee-Seop Choi hits 6 homeruns in the 3 game series against Minnesota.
It's good to be me.

I wonder if its any conincidence that Hee-Seop Choi hits 3 homeruns (including the go-ahead) the same day I make out with a white girl.

It's like I channeled my confidence into Hee-Seop. Or maybe versa-visa.

The path of han.
A bundle of Choi.
Hee's on fire!

Hee-Seop Choi! Hee-Seop Choi! Hee-Seop Choi!

Hit a two run blast in the 1st and a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 9th to beat the twins last night 6-5.

And what does he think of the chanting?

"I like it," Choi said of the chanting. "More energy. I hit home runs for fans today. I love fans. A left-handed pitcher, I wanted to hit."

What a nice guy!

Hee-Seop-mania in full effect.

Girls seem to be on the forefront of my mind right now.

And it's as though they seem to be reciprocating my advances.

Understandable. How can women resist such honesty as --

Scopin you down, you're looking fly to me...

And you know I'm feelin the vibe on the dancefloor when I start saying things like

Don't talk, baby just move with me.

What???? Yeah, I jacked those lines from Jon B.

But you can't front on lyrics like --

All dressed up, and buying your own drinks
And that ain't right
Not that you can't handle it on your own
But you're too damn fly to drink all alone

How close am I to buying this?

Fellas, grab a lady's hand.
Ladies, go an choose your man.

Positive is the attitude. Can't nobody f--- with Jodeci!

Uh-oh, permagrin is setting in.

!Feliz Viernes!

They call me low maintenance and down to earth.

So what do I need to get me through the day:

Beats, Rhymes, and Life.
Female presence, conversation, and touch.
Coffee, Fruit, and a sensible dinner.

I like romance or at least the idea of it.
It's fun.
Build-a-bear fun.

Someone who I live with is all about the romance, sweet nothings, and stuffed animals.
There's this complicated hybrid of misery and pleasure I get when witnessing such acts of chivalry.

And I'm leaning more towards the side of pleasure.

Because "the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love."

True indeed.

Very endearing.

"Tell them about the polar bear (swim)" -- CDC

Girls.

And how I love them.
And I how I enjoy the absurdity of the opposite sex.
And how I compare them to --

Polar Bears?

If you want to discover all there is to know about polar bears, you study like, 10 of them.

But we don't understand this.

Because we live in America.
Where everyone is an individual.

Something I learned in Kindergarten, think it was called the "Pledge of Allegiance".

...one nation, under god, individual...

So this means all women people are unique, ri-right?

But take a lesson from the polar bears.
Study the species and you'll discover all there is to know about their actions, reactions, and mating habits.

Is it any different for women?
Go on 10 dates, and discover all there is to know about their actions, reactions, and mating habits?

And she'll wonder if I'll induce the pangs of painful recognition:

The precise discomfort in the moments before a not-entirely-unwanted kiss?
The pregnant silences in a bad date?
The closing trap of a busted white lie?
Maybe I have all the wrong answers.
But I love asking all the right questions.

...He could hide behind a human shield, but doesn't.

He could offer only sanitized communication through a skittish sidekick, but won't.

He could disappear beneath that cloak known as a language barrier — his native language is Korean — but refuses.

"I play in America," he says. "I have to speak English."

So he tries, sometimes stumbling, often staggering, hemming and hawing but never quitting until he has answered a question or complimented a teammate or thanked a fan....

Plashke writes a very endearing article on the gentle giant and his bravery in today's LA Times.
