I'm glad my article could be of use in a classroom. It's always nice to
think I can have some role educating the young folks.

J.A.

Sorry to bother you again, but just as a quick follow up. After I finished
reading your article this morning. I spoke briefly with my buddy Andy (a big
JA fan) who happened to be online preping for his day upcoming school day.
Andy is another young minority profession who happens to teach high school
at the Accelerated School in South Central, Los Angeles
http://accelerated.org

Anyways, even though he teaches math he decided it would be a great idea to
bring up this topic in class and let his kids debate your article. Below
you will find a summary.

Thanks again for your provacative article, and your great work.

Carlos

I discussed that whole article with all my classes today, they seemed to
really enjoy.

Before I started the discussion, I had the kids list 5 pros and 5 cons about
having a uniform. Among some of the answers for pros included:

Nobody looks rich or poor,
No gang affiliation
Easy to choose what to wear.

Most of the cons had to do with expression and identity.

And then we read the article...I discussed how identity is important in
America, and how your style of dress is important during the teenage years.

But we also discussed the idea of employability and how nobody would take
you serious if you were dressed like garbage.

Overall, great fun in the class...the older kids loved it, the younger ones
(7th-8th) were still juvenile...but I think the message was clear.

Thanks man.

Good Morning Mr. Doan. My name is L---- A----- and I am A----- mother. I received A----- progress report yesterday and I see that he has an D in your class. Can you please advise me of what he is doing and most important what he is not doing in your class. Thank you for your time.

L----- A-----

Dear Ms. A-----,

All you're son does in class is pick his boogers and flicks them at girls to try to get their attention. This is no way for a young man to act.

If he truly want to get attention from girls, he needs to act more like a MAN. He needs to STOP picking boogers and START humping any and all inatimate objects like a dog in heat.

Sincerely,
Mr. Doan

I really like it when people make dinner for me. Anytime somebody plays host...thank you. Thank you so much. Making food for others is truly an open display of hospitality and love.

I will never complain when there is a plate of food in front of my mouth.

Happy Birthday to my friend, Matt Costello. It just seems like yesterday I met you at your apartment on Pardall as we drank Spring Quarter 2002 away. Damn, 3 1/2 years ago. From Uruguay and Brazil, to all you've endured throughout this past year, you still never cease to amaze me with your courage and tenacity.

You truly have a lion's heart.
Happy 26th.

(I will now wear my blogger shirt.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1994-1997, my high school years.

always felt more mature than my peers, perhaps the family drama, the keen eye to detail, the aural pleasure of these classics:

common-i used to love her
the roots-illadelph halflife
alkaholiks- coast 2 coast
jay-z- reasonable doubt
mobb deep-the infamous
nas-illmatic
az-doe or die
raekwon-cuban linx
heltah sheltah-nocturnal
cnn-war report
bahamadia-kollage
odb-return of the 36 chambers
wu-tang- wu tang forever
common-one day it will all make sense
ogc- the storm
mop-firing squad
redman-muddy waters
de la soul-stakes is high
gza-liguid swords
ghostface-ironman
big-life after death
nas- it was written

And that's just off the top. Seems like I spent all my lunch money on these cassettes/cd's...and would listen to this while bustin out recursive sequences on my TI-82.

Say Word.

10 years later, we got a rebirth of some sense in the underground. Alot of MC's taking a back to basics approach.

Check out Atmosphere and Jin for that bomb squad-esque sound.

And while your at Amazon..

An Open Letter to Grapefruit Juice.

Dear Grapefruit Juice ,

Until recently, I thought I had imbibed every possible mixer that could be concocted with vodka. At 16, I tried an Absolut White Russian. At 18, I tasted my very first charcoal-filtered Gatorfade. At 19, my girlfriend introduced me to the Long Island and the Cape Cod (as well as other unmentionable acts of glee.) At 21 came the highly caffeinated and potentially destructive Skyy Redbull Vodkas. On my 23rd birthday, Southwest Airlines offered me a free Smirnoff Bloody Mary on my flight to Vegas. At 24, I truly became a vodka connosieur an only ordered Ketel Rocks with a twist at the bar. At 25, Homie Roadtrip allowed me to taste the sweet chaos of Vodka con Speed.

And now at 26, you, dear Grapefruit Juice, have taken me aback with your pungent tartness and incredible compatability with Greygoose.

Like a match made in inebriated heaven, you are soley my beverage of choice during Friday afternoon happy hours, rambuctious Saturday Night getdowns, and lazy Sunday afternoons at the racetrack. I long for you during work hours. I miss you when you're not around. I want you. I yearn for you.

And you even had a name???

Sir, a round of Ketel One Greyhounds, please! Oh, how quenching you are!

Please never leave me Grapefruit Juice...for as long as I stay finnicky and body-conscious, your sweet nectar will always dazzle my tastebuds.

Sincerely yours,
acat

Is there a more consistent snack food then wheat thins?

Seriously, the deliciousness makes me want to make love to the cracker.

Sweet, crunchy, nutty love.

(If there is such a thing as crunchy love. Use your imagination.)

Sometimes i like to sleep in my freshly fluffed laundry on a rainy day.

While Knotts was somewhat of disappoinment, World Famous Beat Junkie and Power 106 DJ, Mr. Choc, was fresh como siempre.

Detroit Bar out in Costa Mesa definitely brought the flavor as Mr. Choc rocked the OC crowd, myself included, after being annoyed at all the teeny-boppers out on a Saturday night.

(There really is not a whole lot of options for 16-year-olds...I realize that now 10 years later. )

I guess Knotts is cool at that age but if I had a choice between Knotts and some ill beats...well...you know what my decision would be.

I've seen Mr. Choc spin before and it's almost as though he dips his records in some Popeye's world famous spicy fried chicken batter because his set is on fire!

You know how sometimes a producer can make a rapper sound good just because of his beats? (For example, Primo and Guru?)

Well you know a DJ has a choice selection of cuts when he can make normally dorky OC white girls look like they have rhythm.

Anyway, that was my weekend.

You have what it takes to be a lifer...

...so said the Principal.

?Como?

I don't like that word, lifer.

You stay here late. You're here early. You have it, Andrew.

Yeah, but sir, I'm 26. And I'm good looking. (What's up to my main man in Chile. And America's Team.)

Wouldn't you want to learn from me, too?

Especially with these threads?

You won't feel it until year 3 or 4.

Whatever.

I'll be the first to admit that I have this underground rap elitist mindstate mixed with the irony of how you discover your identity through the things you hate.

I wonder what Mike Dunleavy Jr. tells Mike Dunleavy Sr. when senior asks,

So, son...what's the first play Montgomery has you running when we meet on October 24th?

Dad I can't tell you.

I'll kill you.

I will now take the train to work.

Anybody else feel this pain in the morning where the first thought in your mind as your eyelids pop open is....

SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

It's all mental really. Defeating that voice is half the battle in the war on AM. Taking that shower, talking to the Starbucks Barista, and embracing L.A. traffic are all pre-game rituals as I mount the attack upon the workday.

(And I love the fact that I just said, mount the attack.)

I truly believe that if there is any one area where all your personal habits and behavioral practices come into play, it is the realm of dating.

Oh and remember, pay attention to sexual signals as they develop.

the striker position in soccer is a metaphor for good people in this world.

The striker doesn't necessarily have to run back on defense, that's the defenders responsibility.

But man, when he does run back on defense, the fullback is so happy that he has an extra man guarding the opposing team's forward.

Good people take on added responsibilities when they don't have to/

hmmm...

sometimes i make grilled cheese's for people when i don't have to.

Just kidding on the Clippers.
